PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Cameron Ford
Senior
QB
Tyler Chapel Hill High School
Class 4A
Cameron Ford checked off all the boxes in leading his team to a 65-33 season-opening win. Ford completed 12 of 18 passes for 316 yards and five touchdowns – including one to his brother, Bam – and carried nine times for 73 yards and two scores. Listed by his coach on a preseason questionnaire as a “dual threat, big and fast, accurate passer, hard-nosed runner and a playmaker,” Ford displayed all of those qualities while tossing TD passes of 43, 29, 81, 5 and 19 yards and adding a pair of 1-yard TD runs.
“I try to be honest on those preseason questionnaires. He’s obviously all of those things you want in a dual threat quarterback, but the best thing about Cam is his leadership. He’s a student of the game. He probably watches as much film as the coaches do, and he approaches the game in a businesslike manner.” – Chapel Hill head coach Jeff Riordan

Dane Jentsch
Senior
QB/DB
Grandview High School
Class 3A
In a performance reminiscent of Grandview’s state championship victories the last two years, Dane Jentsch carried the Zebras in their 31-24 overtime win against Malakoff. The senior quarterback threw for 238 yards and two touchdowns, ran for 75 yards and a touchdown, and also caught a touchdown pass. His rushing touchdown in overtime put Grandview ahead for good in a matchup featuring a pair of preseason top 5 teams in 3A Division I. Jentsch was the offensive and defensive MVP of the 3A Division I title games in 2018 and 2019.

Roddrell Freeman
Senior
QB/LB
Mart High School
Class 2A
The 3-time state champs are looking to add a 4th title to their belt led by 2-way player Roddrell Freeman. Freeman led his team with 19 carries for 204 yards and 3 touchdowns, but he was not done there, as he also contributed on the other side of the ball with 9 tackles, 4 for a loss, and 1 sack. When the well-mannered Freeman is done dominating on the football field he is contributing in basketball and track.
“Roddrell may go down as the best player ever in Mart football history. He’s never missed a game in his high school career. He is about to start his 50th game with a record of 44-5 and 3 state championships. – Mart coach Kevin Hoffman

Lucas Coley
Senior
QB
Cornerstone Christian School San Antonio
Private School
Lucas Coley, who has committed to Arkansas, piled up 348 yards of total offense, passed for one touchdown and ran for two more in a 24-20 win over state-ranked Corpus Christi Calallen. Coley passed for 147 yards and rushed for 201 against the Wildcats, who started the season No. 4 in Class 4A. One of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in Greater San Antonio, Coley had a 59-yard scoring strike and rushed for TDs of 74 and 35 yards. Coley keyed an offense that finished the season opener with 402 yards – 255 rushing and 147 passing. Coley, who started for Cornerstone last year after transferring from Converse Judson, had more than 30 scholarship offers before committing to Arkansas in June. Coley, 6-foot-1 and 203 pounds, generated more than 3,000 yards of total offense and had a hand in 30 touchdowns last season.
“Lucas is like a coach on the field. Lucas has done an excellent job for us. He’s got all the measurables. He can throw it. He can run it. He’s also good at those intangibles that go unnoticed, like his leadership ability. That’s what I’m most impressed with.” – Cornerstone coach John Bachman
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
![Richard_Reese[1]-resized](https://fordplayeroftheweek.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Richard_Reese1-resized.png)
Richard Reese
Junior
RB
Bellville High School
Class 4A
Bellville has three running backs in the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame, including Willie Zapalac, Ernie Koy and Ted Koy. But no Brahmas running back has surpassed Richard Reese’s 345 yards on 24 carries in a 54-41 win over Cameron Yoe. Reese’s record precedes Zapalac’s, the longtime Texas Longhorns assistant coach during the Darrell Royal era, old school record of 323 yards against Caldwell in 1938. On Friday night, Reese also scored on runs of 49, 30, 26, 40, 67, and 3 yards, caught a 40-yard scoring pass and had a 39-yard kickoff return for 424 all-purpose yards. He’s already receiving recruiting inquiries, which will no doubt increase in the wake of his record-setting performance in a game that featured scoring plays totaling more than 500 yards.
“The best way I can describe Richard is that he runs angry, but he can outrun you if he needs to. One of his best runs was a 3-yard carry for a first down when they had him in the backfield, and he got away. Richard was born in Bellville and was in my Little Brahma program when he was younger, so he knows about the football tradition in Bellville. It’s been neat to see him grow up and play for us.” – Bellville coach Grady Rowe
![Zach_Hrbacek[1]-resized](https://fordplayeroftheweek.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Zach_Hrbacek1-resized.png)
Zach Hrbacek
Senior
RB
Troy High School
Class 3A
In an interview this week, Robinson football coach Robert Rubel was asked about the upcoming Rockets game against Troy on Friday. The discussion all but immediately turned to Troy High School running back Zach Hrbacek, “I’ve watched him and coached against him for three-years, and he’s the best running back we’ve faced during that time. And, he’ll be the best player we’ll face this season, he’s a very talented player, and we’ll have to do our job to try and stop him.”
And, that’s after what Hrbacek did on Friday against Mexia when he finished with 42-carries for 296-yards and 6-TD’s and if that wasn’t enough, he returned a kickoff 103-yards for a TD in a 55-37 win. When Troy football coach Ronnie Porter was asked about his star running back, he replied, “Zach has taken on a different kind of leadership role for the 2020 season. In the past, he has always led by example but was a man of few words. He understands now that the other players look up to him and has been a vocal leader on the field and at practice.”
Hrbacek has already compiled 577-yards rushing and 10-TD’s in two games, not including the long kick return. This was to be expected after Hrbacek’s spectacular junior season when the Sam Houston State commit finished with 2,746-yards on 340-carries and 35-TD’s. He added another 223-yards and 3-TD’s receiving a year ago.

Caden Johnson
Senior
LB/TE
McCamey High School
Class 2A
McCamey senior Caden Johnson made the most of his chances in his first game of the season. The Badgers senior was all over the field in the team’s 64-0 victory over Menard on Friday. McCamey had to wait an extra week to play after their Week 1 game was canceled. Johnson was making his first start at middle linebacker after playing defensive end last season for the Badgers. He made the most of his opportunities, finishing with a team-high 12 tackles, eight tackles for loss, four sacks, a pressure, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and two blocked kicks. Johnson also made an impact on the offensive end, finishing with 41 yards receiving, a touchdown and 28 yards rushing.
“Caden is the kind of kid you want in your program. He works his tail off and outworks everybody every day. He followed his keys, and it paid off for him Friday night. We’re extremely proud of him.” -McCamey Head Coach Michael Woodard
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

KeAmodre Horace
Senior
RB
Center High School
Class 4A
There was little doubt who was getting the ball on Friday, but there was also little chance of stopping him. Center’s KeAmodre Horace turned in a career night in leading the Roughriders to a 41-40 win over Gladewater, carrying 24 times for 391 yards and five touchdowns. Horace, a 2,000-yard rusher a year ago, is apace to eclipse that mark – having already rushed for 729 yards and scoring 13 touchdowns through three games. He’s averaging 15.2 yards per carry this season.
“He’s the engine – our go-to guy. You have to have someone who can do those things in those situations and those ballgames, and he’s definitely that person. The sky is the limit for him because of the type of person he is more than the kind of football player he is. He’s a humble kid, and you would never know by the way he carries himself how great a football player he is. There’s a reason his teammates made him a captain.” – Center Coach Scott Ponder

Mario Sanchez
Senior
QB
Denver City High School
Class 3A
Denver City quarterback Mario Sanchez put together his best performance of the season so far this past Friday night. The senior signal caller was a dual threat, accounting for 467 of the team’s 545 yards of total offense and all seven touchdowns in the Mustangs’ 50-36 victory over Seminole.
Sanchez did most of his work on the ground, finishing with 171 yards rushing on 26 carries and five touchdowns. Through the air, Sanchez went 17 of 23 for 296 yards and two scores. The 296 yards passing and the five touchdowns are both career-best marks during his time as the Denver City quarterback. The Mustangs moved to 2-1 on the season thanks in large part to Sanchez’s leadership.
“This is an honor for Mario, as well as the entire football team. Mario is a special young man – not just on Friday night. He is definitely a huge blessing to be around every day. He is the kid that enjoys life as much as he does playing football. He is the one that works hard on every play. You never have to wonder if he is going to show up ready to get after it. He will practice as hard as he intends to play every day.” – Denver City Coach Daniel Fontenot

Anson Rendon
Senior
RB/DB
Lockney High School
Class 2A
The Lockney Longhorns defeated the Boys Ranch Roughriders 24-12, but the story was all about Senior, two-way player Anson Rendon. Anson was all over the field and contributed on every score as he amassed 303 yards rushing, 3 touchdowns, 3 two-point conversions. If this wasn’t enough, he caught 1 pass for 11 yards, made 4 solos tackles and broke up 2 passes. Rendon has 458 yards through 2 games and has set himself up and his team to have a fantastic season.
“Anson’s athletic ability is surpassed by his effort and willingness to do whatever his team needs him to do. His rare combination of talent and work ethic has made him into a player that the team can lean on week to week.” – Lockney Coach Stacy Ward
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Elijah “EJ” Lopez
Sophomore
QB
Andrews High School
Class 4A
Elijah “EJ” Lopez is just a sophomore, but the standout quarterback played beyond his years in Andrews’ 54-13 win over Seminole on Friday night to improve to 3-1 on the season.
Lopez completed 21-of-32 passes for 387 yards and seven touchdowns, including a 96-yard touchdown pass to Markeese Lawrence. The six-foot-one, 170-pound signal caller completed passes to eight different receivers and his seven touchdown passes went to three different receivers. It was Lopez’s first game this season without throwing an interception, showing his progression as a quarterback and his understanding of the game.
With Lopez’s Week 4 performance, he is now the Class 4A state leader in touchdown passes with 17 and ranks third in passing yards with 1,205.
It was certainly a week Lopez and the Andrews Mustangs will soon not forget.

Brett Hoffman
Senior
QB
Buffalo High School
Class 3A
Buffalo High School quarterback Brett Hoffman looked to wrap up non-district play this past week versus the Teague Lions and he did not disappoint as he put together an incredible performance leading the Bisons to a resounding 45-9 victory.
Hoffman was in complete command as his offensive line gave him plenty of time to survey the field and find his open receivers. Hoffman spread the ball all over the field completing 21 of 26 passes to eight different receivers for 426 yards. He threw six touchdowns including a 45-yard connection with Eric Beshears and contributed another 63 yards on the ground.
Hoffman is a leader on and off the field and has his team at 4-0 as they start district play and look to maintain their momentum and push to the playoffs.

Jakory Standley
Junior
QB/DB
Shelbyville High School
Class 2A
Shelbyville junior quarterback Jakory Standley missed football practice on Thursday to visit his father who was dying of Cancer. Dragons head coach David Benbow told Standley he didn’t have to play in the game on Friday against Groveton. But, Standley responded, “I’m playing, that’s the last thing my father told me to do, go play in that game.”
There is no way anyone knew what was next, both on and off the field as Standley played the game of his life completing 15-19 passes for 388-yards and 4-TD’s, rushing for 109-yards and two touchdowns. And, if that wasn’t enough, he also finished with four tackles and one pass broken up on defense during Shelbyville’s 54-27 victory against Groveton. But, when Standley and his teammates walked to the fieldhouse, his mother was waiting for him with the news, Jakory’s father, who was alive when the game started had passed away before it ended.
Benbow said, “As you can imagine, Jakory was an emotional wreck and that was such a difficult moment.” Benbow added, “Jakory makes the school, community and team better, he’s a leader and a quality individual and we’re incredibly proud of how he handled such a difficult situation.”

Kyle Brown
Senior
QB
Cedar Park Vista Ridge High School
Class 6A
They say some things are worth waiting for and the start of the football season was worth the wait for the Vista Ridge Rangers. Senior quarterback Kyle Brown led Vista Ridge to a 62-35 win over Hays, throwing for 413 yards and six touchdowns. Brown added another 26 yards on the ground and a rushing touchdown. As good quarterbacks do, he gave the credit to his wide receivers and offensive line following the win. Last season, Brown threw 41 touchdowns to just four interceptions and continues to have the look of a future Division I quarterback.
“Kyle is a tremendous competitor in football and represents our program well in the classroom and community. He continues to improve and work extremely hard on the little things that make a great quarterback. I am just as proud of the way he has developed and worked at being a leader on and off the field.” – Vista Ridge Head Coach Rodney Vincent

Nathaniel Sada
Junior
RB/LB
Foy H Moody High School
Class 5A
On a night where momentum swings were common, Corpus Christi Moody’s Nathaniel Sada found a way to either help the Trojans keep it or regain it. Sada accounted for four touchdowns in Moody’s 46-43 win against Beeville Jones in their season opener on Sept. 24 at legendary Buc Stadium in Corpus Christi.
His first touchdown was a 2-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, but that was just the beginning. After that it was nothing but big plays for the junior. Sada returned the opening kickoff of the third quarter 80 yards for a touchdown. Ten minutes later, he did it again, this time 65 yards as Beeville Jones tried a pooch kick that he picked up and ran around down the sideline for the score. Sada closed out the night with a 76-yard touchdown catch and run that gave Moody the lead for good.
Sada finished his spectacular night with 106 yards receiving on three catches, a rushing touchdown, and his two special team’s touchdowns. Sada is an A student at Moody, part of AVID and has been on the varsity basketball and track teams since he was a freshman.
“He’s a tremendous young man – great character. He’s just a hard worker, a great teammate and all in all he’s a great kid and great young man that is great to be around and coach.” – Moody Head Coach Michael Cantu

Tyler Townley
Senior
QB
Caddo Mills High School
Class 4A
Tyler Townley continued his consistent destruction of opposing defenses in a 50-28 win over Aubrey, completing 17 of 23 passes for 400 yards and three touchdowns and adding 20 carries for 157 yards and two more scores. It marked the fourth straight game Townley has passed for at least 250 yards and three touchdowns and the third game in a row he has rushed for at least 150 yards and two scores.
“He’s just very consistent in the run and pass game. He’s absolutely one of the smartest kids I’ve ever coached. His knowledge of what’s going on offensively and defensively is next level. He sees things on the field a lot of people don’t see, and it’s because he studies so hard and works so hard. He studies film on the weekend and during the week. He’s just a great kid who is highly-competitive and wants great things for his football team.” – Caddo Mills Head Coach Kodi Crane

DJ Allen

WR
Gladewater High School
Class 3A
In a classic case of taking what the other team gives you, DJ Allen put on a show in Gladewater’s 42-21 win over Tatum. With the Eagles determined to stop Gladewater’s ground game, Allen burned the secondary to the tune of 10 catches for 283 yards and five touchdowns. His TD grabs covered 15 and 48 yards in the first quarter, 26 yards in the second quarter and 89 and 69 yards in the final period. For the year, Allen has caught 30 passes, and 10 have gone the distance
“We’ve been predominantly known as a running team, so we’re getting people crowding the box. It was just one of those nights where DJ made every play: a one-handed catch, breaking tackles. Just a great game. Moving forward, the passing game could be one of those things that puts us over the top.” – Gladewater Head Coach Jonny Louvier

He continues to lead his team each week as they continue to push their way to post-season. The junior now has 25 touchdown passes compared to just 4 interceptions during Lindsay’s 5-0 start. Knights coach Jeff Smiley is impressed by Schuckers’ poise.
“Not much flusters Kolt. Sometimes I wish some things did fluster him,” – Lindsay Head Coach Jeff Smiley
![Montaye_Dawson[1]-resized](https://fordplayeroftheweek.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/Montaye_Dawson1-resized.jpg)
Montaye Dawson
Senior
RB
All Saints Episcopal School
Private School
Montaye Dawson had an electrifying debut in Fort Worth All Saints’ 70-50 season-opening win over Azle. Dawson, a 3-star SMU commit, carried 17 times for 359 yards and 5 touchdowns, including scores from 75, 63, and 57 yards. Dawson transferred to All Saints for his senior season after spending the last three years at Mansfield Timberview. Dawson runs behind an offensive line anchored by twins and Alabama commits Tommy and James Brockermeyer.
“Montaye has been a great addition to the All Saints’ football program in many ways. Not only is he a special player, he is an unselfish person. Montaye is very focused on his teammates and inspires others to be great as well. As far as his talent, he is truly unique in his ability to move quickly in all directions. His change of pace and patience with the line in setting blocks puts him at an elite level.” – All Saints Episcopal Head Coach Aaron Beck
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Ty Dillon
Senior
DB
Round Rock High School
Class 6A
Sometimes, the biggest plays in a game don’t show up in a boxscore. In a 35-33 season-opening win, Round Rock cornerback Ty Dillon made a four-point impact, blocking two Belton kicks, a third quarter extra-point and a 22-yard field goal with two seconds left in the game. His two blocks came from either side of the line. The 5-10, 165-pound all-district Dillon also stars as an outfielder in baseball.
“He’s a two-year starter and on most all our special teams. He plays much bigger than his size.”
– Round Rock Head Coach Jeff Cheatham

EJ Ezar
Junior
QB
James Earl Rudder High School
Class 5A
In a non-district game that included 11 second-half touchdowns, EJ – as in Eric Joe, the son of Rudder coach Eric Ezar – completed 22 of 27 passes for 425 yards and carried six times for 209 yards and a score in the Rangers’ 63-56 victory. The Ezar family moved from Willis, where the elder Ezar was athletic director, to Bryan after EJ’s freshman year, and he’s shouldered well the pressure that comes from being the coach’s son. Ezar’s great-grandfather, Joe Ezar, was a professional golfer known for his trick shot capabilities who ran with the likes of Bing Crosby and was once profiled in The New Yorker. In that vein, EJ drew a key offsides penalty against Weiss by altering his cadence and three 15-yard penalties after defenders tackled him out of bounds.
“He’s one of those kids who is very savvy. He lives, eats and drinks football and is aware of his surroundings. He knows and studies the game and is really smart. We called a hitch route on one play, and when the corner bit in, EJ pumped and threw it to the outside receiver. He’s in all AP classes and has a 4.1 GPA and ranks 19th in his class. There definitely are challenges when you coach your son, because he has to be better than everybody else. But EJ has lived up to that.”
– Rudder Head Coach Eric Ezar

Jordan Jenkins
Senior
RB
Lindale High School
Class 4A
Lindale running back Jordan Jenkins, who has given a verbal pledge to Baylor, continued to be a workhorse for the Eagles in a 52-6 win over Chapel Hill. Jenkins carried 26 times for 285 yards and scored four touchdowns, all in a little more than two quarters of action after the Eagles turned things into a blowout. After spotting Chapel Hill an early touchdown, Jenkins took his first carry of the evening 72 yards for an answering touchdown and then took over from there. Jenkins has now rushed for 1,014 yards and 14 touchdowns to help Lindale begin district play with a 2-0 record.
“That’s not the way we drew it up. They went down and scored at will, but I think it sums up who Jordan is and what he means to the program the way he answered the call. I know he’d want me to say it, but it was him and the offensive line. It was wide open. He hit a crease, and he was gone. That sort of let us settle in and from that point forward, we dominated the game. We give a Player of the Week award, and this week, for the first time, it was our entire offensive line. Jordan was really fired up about that. He’s just an unselfish young man and such a team guy. He wants it to be all about the team.”
– Lindale Head Coach Chris Cochran

Trevion Sneed
Senior
RB/LB
Mineola High School
Class 3A
A standout on both sides of the ball, Mineola’s Trevion Sneed got limited touches on offense in a 55-23 win over Bonham. But he made them count, rushing for 215 yards and five touchdowns on just nine carries. Defensively, he recorded nine tackles, a fumble recovery, a tackle for loss and two quarterback pressures. It was an average game for Sneed, an SMU verbal pledge who averages 207 rushing yards and 9.8 tackles per game for the unbeaten (5-0) Yellowjackets.
“Trevion does so much for us on both sides of the ball, but that’s just who he is. He’s highly competitive in everything he does. He loves to compete, and he wants to represent and do things the right way every opportunity he gets on offense or defense. SMU is recruiting him as a linebacker, but they might change their mind the way he has been running the ball this year. They’ll figure that out later. I just know they are excited to get him as a football player.”
– Mineola Head Coach Luke Blackwell

Cole Carson
Senior
OL/DL
Rivercrest High School
Class 2A
Fans saw an incredible defensive performance on Friday as 6-6, 285-pound two-way player Cole Carson was a one-man wrecking crew for the Rivercrest Rebels. He led the Rebels with 15 tackles, one blocked punt that he returned for 15-yards, two forced fumbles and a blocked extra point. The Rebels beat the Celeste Blue Devils 31-20.
“Cole is a great student athlete. He works extremely hard both in the classroom and on the field. He is a captain of our team, member of the leadership council, and committed to play football at the University of Arkansas.”
– Rivercrest Head Coach Lance Connot

Preston Stone
Senior
QB
Dallas Parish Episcopal
Private School
The top-ranked private school team in Texas is led by one of the top quarterback recruits in the country. Preston Stone accounted for five touchdowns in Dallas Parish Episcopal’s 50-24 win over Argyle Liberty Christian. Stone, a four-star prospect who is committed to SMU, threw for 265 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another 101 yards and two scores. Parish Episcopal improved to 2-0 in its quest to repeat as TAPPS Division I state champions.
“It’s hard to describe, but [Stone] almost plays football like a point guard in basketball. He just kind of feels who’s open, and it’s like he’s playing downhill and running the fast break.”
– Dallas Parish Episcopal Head Coach Daniel Novakov

The Texas-bound Wright threw for 496 yards and 6 touchdowns and added a rushing score too.
“He’s an amazing kid, as dialed in a football player as I’ve ever seen, and he’s been that way since he was 14. He’s a kid who on Saturday night when most kids are hanging out with friends, he’ll shoot us a text because he’s watching football and has a question. He’s a football junkie.”

Robertson is a three-year varsity starter for Lubbock Coronado and one of the leaders of the Mustangs’ touchdown for a Top 10 program in Class 5A Division 1.
“Sawyer has a lot of ability on the field but he’s also a great teammate and a good person. He’s put in a lot of hard work and it’s always great to see someone from our school get this kind of recognition.”

Raymondville High School
Class 4A
The Raymondville Bearkats made a major statement in their season debut at home on Friday, Oct. 9 against Victoria West thanks to senior running back ZaRaiVion Armendarez. In a 38-33 win, Armendarez did a little bit of everything correctly as he scored all six of the Kats’ touchdowns.
On the ground, he carried the ball 24 times for 265 yards and four scores that included a run of 76 yards early on. He also scored on two receptions, including one on a short pass that he turned into a 67-yard TD thanks to his impressive speed. On the night, he hauled in five passes for 92 yards and the two scores. He even completed one pass for 15 yards and finished the game with 357 all-purpose yards.
In addition to his skills on the gridiron, Armendarez is a track & field star and in the classroom with a 4.2 GPA.
“Considering everything that has gone on this offseason, it was wonderful to see ZaRaiVion perform as well as he did. He showed resiliency and he never slowed down, and the rest of the team fed off of his energy and came together for the win,”

Huntington High School
Class 3A
At 5-8, 165 pounds, Hunter Mayes doesn’t strike fear into his opponents when he gets off the bus. That typically changes once the whistle blows. Coldspring-Oakhurst got a big sample of that on Friday. Mayes recorded 31 tackles (nine solos) and three tackles for loss on defense in a 34-26 win. Offensively, he threw a three-yard touchdown pass and turned a short pass into a 72-yard touchdown as the Red Devils snapped a three-game losing streak and moved to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in district play.
“He’s one of those classic small school kids with Division I talent but not Division I size. He’s a 4.6 kid, a sprinter on our track team and a regional qualifier in powerlifting. He’s the hardest working kid I’ve coached in my 17-year career. He’s everything you want in a kid. He’s a hard-nosed player, a leader, captain of the team and the Valedictorian of his senior class. There’s just nothing bad you can say about this kid.”

Dawson High School
Class 2A
Leading up to Dawson’s district game with Axtell, Bulldogs head coach Ronnie Striplin told senior running back Da’Mariyea Hamilton they needed him to play all three running back positions because of depth problems. Da’Mariyea responded each time, “don’t worry coach, I’ll do whatever we need,” and did he ever. Hamilton rushed for 306-yards on just 16-carries and scored 6-TD’s in a 43-14 win against the Longhorns.
Hamilton did even more at his linebacker position, finishing the game with seven tackles and two tackles for losses. Striplin added, “A couple of times during the game we needed a first down and Da’Mariyea told me to run a specific play and not only did we pick up the first down, he scored on both plays.” Da’Mariyea shares the Bulldogs backfield with twin brother Ja’Mariyea and they have combined for a potent 1-2 punch for the Bulldogs.
And if this wasn’t enough, Da’Mariyea was also named the Homecoming King earlier this year.
“Da’Mariyea and I have a special relationship and the team refers to him as my son, I feel like that’s true most weeks.” Striplin added, “Da’Mariyea works and plays hard and that’s all any coach would want on his football team”

For the second time in three weeks, Trinity Christian’s Davis Reeves put up big numbers on both sides of the football. Reeves posted 245 total yards and three touchdowns in a 37-20 loss to McKinney Christian Academy on Friday night. On defense, the senior tallied 17 total tackles for the Lions proving why he is one of the top two-way players in Lubbock. Trinity Christian is 1-2 (1-1) this season but look for Reeves to get the Lions back above .500 before season’s end.

Bo Edmundson
Sophomore
QB
Lake Travis High School
Class 6A
For a school with a rich tradition of producing top high school and college quarterbacks, Bo Edmundson became Lake Travis’ first 400-yard passer since 2017. Edmundson completed 23 of 27 passes for 459 yards and six touchdowns to lead the undefeated and seventh-ranked Cavaliers to a 70-35 win over Buda Hays.
Not bad for a sophomore who was supposed to be a backup. Senior starter Nate Yarnell, who is committed to Pittsburgh, suffered an injury to a finger on his throwing hand during preseason. Edmundson beat out juniors ahead of him to win the starting job; he had thrown for 393 yards and 5 TDs in Lake Travis’ first two games before his big performance against Hays.
“Bo was thrust into our mix a little quicker than planned, but he has performed unbelievably well. When Nate went down and we opened it up, he really rose to the occasion. Each game he’s played, he’s getting quicker with his decisions. He earned that.”
– Lake Travis Head Coach Hank Carter

Keldric Luster
Sophomore
QB
Frisco Liberty High School
Class 5A
It might be hard to duplicate Keldric Luster’s performance against Frisco Memorial in a video game. The Frisco Liberty sophomore quarterback accounted for 612 total yards and seven touchdowns in Liberty’s 58-51 win. Luster completed 21-of-23 passes for 338 yards and two touchdowns. He added 274 yards and five more scores on the ground.
“Statistically, those are just outrageous numbers. Honestly, it’s just indicative of what a great competitor he is. His teammates and his coaches are shocked that he does that sort of stuff. We get to see him every day in practice and get to see what kind of competitor he is and his talent. He’s a very deserving young man.”

Trayveon Epps
Senior
RB
Kilgore High School
Class 4A
There were no garbage time yards in Trayveon Epps’ record-setting night. Kilgore needed every yard and every touchdown in a 45-38 win over Chapel Hill in a key district game, and Epps provided – carrying 26 times for 401 yards and six touchdowns. Kilgore led 21-0 after one quarter and 28-7 at the half, but Chapel Hill rallied after the break to keep it close, so Kilgore kept feeding Epps the ball.
The 401 yards broke the school record of 359 set back in 2009. His six TD runs (20, 35, 20, 51, 85, 60) also broke the record of five rushing TDs in a game previously held by four players.
“We certainly needed those yards and those scores to come out on top. Tray is the kind of kid who gives all the credit to this offensive line, and those guys did a great job up front, but he did a great job finishing runs. I’m proud of what he accomplished and what he’s going to accomplish. He knew he was going to be our number one back this year, and he worked extremely hard to prepare for his senior season. He’s the kind of kid you enjoy coaching. He just shows up every day and goes to work. I’m not surprised at the success he’s having.”

Cole Andrus completed 28 of 36 passes, with no interceptions, for 435 yards and four touchdowns in Jourdanton’s 41-20 victory over Universal City Randolph in a District 14-3A Division I game. Andrus had touchdown passes of 30, 31, 6 and 11 yards. He sparked an offense that amassed 583 yards – 148 rushing and 435 passing. Jourdanton, 7-1 overall and 4-0 in district play, has won six consecutive games since losing to state-ranked Class 4A power Corpus Christi Calallen. The oldest of Jourdanton head coach Darrell Andrus’ three sons, Cole has completed 158 of 261 passes, with five interceptions, for 2,314 yards and 25 TDs this season. He also has rushed for seven TDs.
He has been the Indians’ starting quarterback since the beginning of his sophomore season. Jourdanton has clinched a playoff spot for the fifth consecutive year in seven seasons under Coach Andrus. A four-sport letterman, Cole is an A-B student and is active in St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Jourdanton.
“Being a coach’s son, Cole has been around the game since the day he was born. He always had a desire to play football and learn about the game. Cole’s understanding of pass coverages and how to check out of plays is really high. He does a great job of preparing each week. He’s also a great team player. He knows this individual award is a reflection of all the hard work every player has put in. Our offensive line has done a phenomenal job, and Cole and his receivers have been together since they were in the sixth grade. Cole’s accuracy and arm strength are his biggest attributes.”

Jordan Landrum
Junior
WR/DB
Rosebud-Lott High School
Class 2A
Earlier this season Rosebud-Lott High School junior defensive back Jordan Landrum intercepted four passes in a 32-13 victory over Wortham and that’s one more win than the Cougars experienced all last season when they finished 0-10. When first-year coach Brandon Hicks took over the program late into the off-season, he didn’t blink – saying that he would have some players who would make a difference this season. Well, one of those players is Landrum, who contributed in all three phases of the Cougars victory on Friday against Moody with six-catches for 84-yards, four-tackles, two interceptions including one returned 67-yards for a touchdown. The other interception was a spectacular one-handed, diving catch on a tipped ball. And, Landrum wasn’t done because he also returned a kickoff 98-yards for a touchdown in Rosebud-Lott’s 34-27 win over Moody.
By the way, Landrum has six interceptions through seven games and is one away from the single-season school record. Hicks said Jordan is a fantastic student in the classroom with a GPA over 3.0 and a total program athlete lettering in football, basketball and track.
“I have the pleasure of inheriting Jordan as a part of the Rosebud-Lott program and a case could be made for him being nominated for Player of the Week every week because you can’t put a tag on the type of energy and leadership to our team every single day. I could not be more proud of this young man or think of a high school athlete more deserving of this award.”

In a 65-14 win over San Antonio Christian, he completed 18 of 33 for 533 yards and eight touchdowns and ran three times for 57 yards. Maddox has committed to the University of Houston, picking the Cougars over Ole Miss, Colorado, Wyoming and Tulane. He was one of 20 finalists for the Elite 11 quarterback camp, and his three older brothers were FBS athletes. Braden played football at Vanderbilt, Anderson plays basketball at Lamar University and Miller plays basketball at Northwestern.
“Maddox is an outstanding student and an outstanding basketball player with college offers in that sport as well. His work ethic is beyond comparison. He has been an incredible influence on St. Thomas athletics through his hard work and dedication.”

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Dematrius Davis
Senior
QB
North Shore High School
Class 6A
Dematrius Davis is best known for his memorable Hail Mary to A.J. Carter that gave North Shore a last-second win over Duncanville for the 2018 Class 6A Division I title, the first of back-to-back titles for the Mustangs. But the quarterback can also roll up numbers in the regular season when the occasion warrants. He completed 15 of 19 for 329 yards and four touchdowns in a 55-14 district win over West Brook, another step toward what could be a third division title for the Mustangs. Davis will graduate in January and plans to enroll at Auburn for the spring semester.
“Dematrius’ accomplishments and athletic accolades speak for themselves. What most people will never fully comprehend is that his greatest contribution to his team, his school and his community is his character and leadership. He is a courteous, respectful, humble young man with an unyielding work ethic that spreads like wildfire through our program.”
– North Shore Head Coach Jon Kay

Philip Amy
Senior
QB
Foster High School
Class 5A
At a mere 5 feet 6, Philip Amy may lack the height that one generally associates with passing quarterbacks. However, Philip was able to throw under, around and through Fort Bend Hightower in a 35-34 win, completing 22 of 33 for 474 yards and four touchdowns. In three games, he has 10 TDs with no interceptions. He has a 98.24 average and takes calculus AP classes at Foster. The Falcons are unbeaten in three games of the COVID-delayed season.
“Philip has always exhibited a relentless work ethic and a great attitude and is a great teammate to everyone. There is not a day that Philip doesn’t come ready to work and do what he can to improve himself and his team. Philip is a guy that everybody likes and wants to be around. We are blessed to have him.”
– Foster Head Coach Shaun McDowell

Jarius Stewart
Senior
QB/DB
Calhoun High School
Class 4A
Jarius Stewart had a long but successful Friday night for the Calhoun Sandcrabs.
The senior started at quarterback and in the secondary and played virtually every minute of the Sandcrabs’ 77-76 District 15-4A, Division I win over Corpus Christi Miller.
Stewart rushed 19 times for 245 yards and six touchdowns, scoring on runs of 54, 5, 70, 37, 1 and 4 yards.
As if these offensive stats weren’t enough, Stewart also contributed on the defensive side of the ball with 12 tackles and broke up three passes.
“This is a young man who never comes off the field. He was playing quarterback and running up and down the field covering their best receiver who was going deep all night. He’s such a dynamic player. He’s such a true leader and the kids love him.”
– Calhoun Head Coach Richard Whitaker

WR/LB
Bushland High School
Class 3A
Brody Sutterfield made the most of his opportunities during his last home game. The senior had a career night receiving, finishing with 11 catches for 259 yards and a pair of scores. If that wasn’t enough, Sutterfield capped off his night with 15 tackles and four pass breakups on defense. His effort played a large part in helping Bushland to a 37-21 victory over Dalhart Friday night and kept the Falcons unbeaten in District 2-3A Division I.
“Brody contributed so much on both sides of the ball. Anytime you look at a senior playing their last home game, you always try to go out with a bang. I know it meant a lot to Brody to play at home one last time and he definitely made his mark.”
– Bushland Head Coach Josh Reynolds

Marc Ramirez
Junior
RB/LB
Wellington High School
Class 2A
Marc Ramirez put together one of his best performances for unbeaten Wellington. Against rival Clarendon, the junior ran for 303 yards on 26 carries with five total touchdowns. Ramirez made an even greater impact on defense, finishing with 16 tackles, a forced fumble and a pass breakup. The Skyrockets moved to 8-0 on the season with a 42-22 victory over the Broncos as Ramirez continued his impressive 2020 season.
“Marc has been a spark plug for us on both offense and defense. He’s the type of kid that leads by example. He goes hard in practice every single day and doesn’t take any plays off. He’s the first that will give the credit to his offensive linemen because that’s just the type of kid he is.”
– Wellington Head Coach Greg Proffitt

Maguire Martin
Sophomore
QB
Prestonwood Christian Academy
Private School
Maguire Martin is just as dangerous with his legs as he is with his arm. Plano Prestonwood Christian’s dual threat quarterback carved up Argyle Liberty Christian in a 47-21 win as the Lions improved to 2-3. Martin, one of nine sophomores who start for Prestonwood on offense, ran for 213 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries and threw for 182 yards and a touchdown. Each score was a big play. Martin’s touchdown runs were from 65 and 53 yards and his touchdown pass to Titus White covered 57 yards.
“No one works harder than this young man. You can tell how he played the other night he wasn’t going to be denied and he would do all he could do for us to be successful. I’m proud of how he stepped up.”

In a 50-6 win over Benjamin Davis, Spring quarterback Bishop Davenport completed 19 of his 26 passes for 342 yards and five touchdowns, four of them coming in the first half. Davenport also added 22 yards on the ground, leading the Lions to a perfect 5-0 start to the season. The junior signal caller has yet to throw an interception this season and has completed 71% of his passes. Davenport has Spring in contention to push for a deep playoff run in Class 6A.
“Bishop is an exceptional young man that is a leader both on the field and in the community. His leadership and commitment to our program has been instrumental in the success of our football team this season. He has a bright future ahead of him and we look forward to watching him continue to grow as a football player and young man.”

With the offense struggling, the Lufkin Panthers needed a lift from the defense in a 13-7 overtime victory against New Caney. Senior defensive lineman Wilburn Smallwood answered the call all night long, finishing with eight tackles, three sacks, three tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, a quarterback pressure and a blocked kick.
Panther head coach Todd Quick, who coached Smallwood’s dad back in 1997, had no doubt Smallwood would step up when Lufkin needed it most.
“We knew what we were getting with Wilburn. His dad was our Mike linebacker. He was a tough-nosed kid who played the right way, so we knew Wilburn knew how to play the game. He played quite a bit as a sophomore and became a leader for us as a junior. We put a lot on him this year as a senior. Our offense wasn’t clicking Friday, and when you punt the ball as much as we did it puts the defense on the field a lot. He just said, ‘I got this.’ He really put it on his shoulders. He took over and made plays all night long.”

Kavian Gaither

QB/LB
Connally High School
Class 4A
In overtime at last week’s game, the Connally Cadets were trailing rival China Spring, 45-44. The Cadets were going for two to try and win the game outright and secure the #2 seed in District 9-4A, Division 2. The game was going to ride on the shoulders of all-everything senior Kavian Gaither, who has already rushed for 201-yards on 28-carries and scored two touchdowns, thrown for 119-yards and another touchdown and scored the Cadets’ touchdown in overtime to setup this critical 2-point attempt. Oh, and the four-year letterman and linebacker also recorded sixteen tackles, 1-TFL and 1-caused fumble during this Instant Classic at Cougar Stadium.
After a timeout, the Cadets planned to run “stretch right,” part of their bread-and-butter with Gaither in the gun with a power set and he would find a way to score. But something went wrong – the snap was low. Gaither, showing amazing poise, picked up the ball, glanced to see if there was any way he could go the opposite way, but two Cougars were right on top of him. Somehow, as he’s done many times throughout his career, “KG” found a way to throw a pass to the right side of the end and there was senior Bronsha Miles, Jr., alone for the game-winning the two-point conversion and the ball game, 46-45 in overtime.
“KG dominated on both sides of the ball and there was no doubt we wanted the ball in his hands in overtime. He never flinched no matter what the score was, as always you can depend on him to get the job done and once again, he came through for his team. KG is a four-year, four-sport letterman and a straight-A student-athlete and one of the best leaders I’ve ever had the privilege to coach. He has two unbelievable parents who have raised a fine young man and we here at Connally are blessed Kavian is part of our program.”

Ernest Ceasar, III torched one of the top defenses in Southeast Texas to help East Chambers clinch the District 10-3A-DI title. The senior totaled 400 yards of offense (358 rushing, 42 receiving) and reached the end zone five times in a 49-20 thumping of Woodville. He was also able to pick up a tackle while playing defense for the Buccaneers. Ceasar is coming off a junior season that saw him named District MVP and Second Team All-State in football. As if that wasn’t enough, Ceasar was also the District MVP and First Team All-State in basketball as a junior.
“He does more with his 5’5” body than anyone around. He’s already scored 31 touchdowns this season in a variety of ways, and many games he has not played in the second half.”

Marlin High School
Class 2A
The Marlin High School football program won 10 or more games six times from 1999 through 2006, including a state championship appearance in 2003 when they lost to the Atlanta Rabbits, 34-0. But, since that 8-year stretch of success, the Bulldogs haven’t won more than eight games (2010) and were 0-10 just two years ago. Enter, David Haynes, Jr., who took over as head coach a year ago, and despite a 2-8 record, you could sense the momentum.
Well, Marlin is now 4-3 after their 62-24 win against Axtell and that’s just part of the story. Marlin rolled up a school-record 797-yards of total offense led by their four-headed monster at quarterback and their running game. The Bulldogs lost their starting quarterback to a broken jaw the week of their district opener and they’ve relied on four different players at quarterback, including Trajon Butler. The sophomore set a school record with 361-yards rushing on just 14-carries against the Longhorns. Yes, that’s nearly 26-yards per carry with TD runs of 89, 56, 20 and 5-yards.
“Baby Tra has a lot of upside to his game and he started his varsity career playing wide receiver and running back and was our District’s Newcomer of the Year as a freshman. Trajon runs a 4.5 forty and is a great student and very respectful, he’s very quiet until you get to know him, and he loves to compete in athletics, obviously in football but also loves to play Fortnite!”

Cross amassed 290 yards passing and two touchdowns, but he was not done there as he contributed another 250 yards on the ground and two touchdowns. He accounted for 540 yards of offense, including a dazzling 68-yard touchdown run.

The Battle of Belt Line went Cedar Hill’s way because the Longhorns had Kaidon Salter on their side. The senior quarterback accounted for 389 yards and six touchdowns in Cedar Hill’s 49-42 win over rival DeSoto. Salter threw for 210 yards and two scores and added 179 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. His 49-yard touchdown run with two minutes left secured the victory. Salter is a four-star recruit who has committed to Tennessee.
“He is such a gamer in every sense of the word. Having him, there’s an aura of confidence and you know he’s going to take care of us at the end of the day.”

Ca’lub Holloway

RB/LB
South Hills High School
Class 5A
This past week Texas high school football fans were treated to an all-around phenomenal performance as senior two-way player Ca’lub Holloway turned in one of the best performances of the year in 5A leading his team to a 52-51 win over the Creekview Mustangs. He contributed with 22 carries for 283 yards and five touchdowns, one reception for 77 yards and touchdown, but wasn’t done there as he also compiled eight tackles defensively. The Scorpions are now 3-3 overall and 2-1 in district play.
“There are so many great things you could say about Ca’lub. He works tremendously hard in the classroom as well as on the field. I think the one thing that separates Ca’lub from most is his personality. He always has an infectious smile on his face and treats others with the utmost respect. I have yet to find an individual that doesn’t get along with this young man. He is not only a leader on our team, but he is truly a leader here at South Hills High School.”
– South Hills Head Coach Mika Harp

Demondre Williams
Senior
LB
Wilmer-Hutchins High School
Class 4A
Wilmer-Hutchins relied on its defense and senior linebacker Demondre Williams to help knock off Pinkston, 26-24, and capture the District 8-4A Division I title. Williams piled up 23 tackles, two tackles for loss, two sacks, one forced fumble, and two pass breakups. Wilmer-Hutchins shut out Pinkston in the second half after trailing, 24-8, at the break.
“We ask him to do a lot. Playing Mike backer in our scheme is the equivalent of being a quarterback in a pass-happy offense. It’s decisions that he makes — the way he sets those guys up to be in the right gaps — it’s a tremendous task. He has done everything a football coach would ask of a kid. We don’t ever want to get on the bus or walk out of our field house to play a football game without Demondre Williams.”
– Wilmer-Hutchins Head Coach Elzie Barnett

Oscar Falcon
Senior
QB
Comfort High School
Class 3A
Comfort quarterback Oscar Falcon did just about everything for the Bobcats in their 76-0 rout of Luling in their regular-season finale Friday night. He completed six of seven passes for 221 yards and three touchdowns, scored twice on punt returns, converted 10 of 11 extra-point kicks, and had six touchbacks on kickoffs. Falcon is also Comfort’s punter, but he got a rare break from those duties because the Bobcats never punted. Falcon started at safety on defense but played on offense only against Luling. Falcon, who threw TD passes of 73, 28 and 22 yards, also scored on punt returns of 52 and 43 yards. He accounted for all five of his TDs in the first half. With Comfort comfortably ahead at the half, Falcon did not pass in the third quarter and only kicked off and kicked extra points in the final period.
“Oscar is one of the hardest workers I’ve ever been around and the most dependable person I’ve ever been around. If you ask him to do anything, he’s there to do it. He’s the most even-keeled person I’ve ever coached. Nothing ever bothers him. He never gets too high; he never gets too low. He’s had some great games when he threw for six or seven touchdowns, and there have been other games when he’s thrown two interceptions. You can’t tell the difference (in his demeanor), which is a good thing. It’s not that he doesn’t care. He’s just going to go out there and play. He’s a great leader because he’s so dependable.”
– Comfort Head Coach Brandon Easterly

Landin Leija

QB
Quanah High School

High school football fans in Quanah, Texas were treated to an incredible performance this past week as senior quarterback Landin Leija helped his team defeat the Seymour Panthers 62-35. Leija completed 17 of 21 passes for 301 yards and 7 touchdowns, with no interceptions. He also rushed for 110 yards on 15 carries with one touchdown. As if eight touchdowns weren’t enough, he contributed with three tackles defensively helping lead the Indians to the 2A state playoffs.
“Landin is the consummate team guy. He’s one of the most unselfish players I have ever coached. He also has an exceptional football IQ. He knows every player’s responsibility and assignment.”
– Quanah Head Coach Jason Cole

Aliajah Allen
Junior
RB
St. John Paul II High School
Private School
Aliajah Allen was expected to contribute this season for Corpus Christi John Paul II in 2020. But when some key players went down with injury, the junior has carried much of the load for the Centurions. Last week against Brownsville Saint Joseph, Allen rushed 37 times for 306 yards and five touchdowns in a 49-34 victory.
Allen has rushed for 995 yards on 133 carries and compiled 13 touchdowns in seven games for John Paul II. Along with football, Allen runs track and plays basketball. He is also currently taking his classes online but plans to join the environmental club when he resumes in-person classes.
“He has had some big games for us this year, but Friday night he simply took over. We had no idea we had given him 37 carries until after the game. He was moving the same from the first carry to the 37th. Aliajah is the type of back that gets better and better as the game goes on. His hard work, effort and selfless attitude has become contagious to his teammates. This is one of the most humble kids I’ve ever coached.”

“His understanding of the offense is on another level. I just trust him so much out there making decisions…it really is the reason we’re able to do what we’re able to do.”

The two-year starter is coming off a season that saw him named First Team All-District.
“Blake is everything you would want in a QB. He’s a leader, an extremely hard worker, and a great teammate. He can make plays with his arm or legs. He’s highly intelligent and makes great decisions with the ball in his hands. We are extremely blessed that he’s a PNG Indian, and I couldn’t be more proud to be his coach.”

Jordan Battles
Senior
QB
Holy Cross of San Antonio High School
Private Schools
Holy Cross quarterback Jordan Battles had a stellar game in the Knights’ 62-14 rout of Schertz John Paul II, rushing for a staggering 409 yards and six TDs on 22 carries. Battles, who averaged 18.6 yards a carry, also completed 8 of 14 passes for 93 yards and a 28-yard TD. Battles’ six rushing TDs covered 5, 31, 88, 11, 24 and 96 yards. It was his first action since missing one game with a knee injury.
Battles sparked an offense that finished with 670 yards. He quarterbacked San Antonio Brandeis to the Class 6A Division II state quarterfinals as a sophomore and junior. One of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the San Antonio area, Battles was District 28-6A MVP last year after accounting for 3,130 yards and 39 touchdowns. Battles was once a ball boy when his father was on the Knights’ coaching staff for seven seasons (2010-16). Shaun Battles also played for the Knights. Jordan played youth football in elementary school with some of his teammates at Holy Cross now. Battles, who also has started at safety this season, is considered an FBS prospect as an athlete.
“I’ve seen Jordan grow up. That’s the really cool part about coaching, seeing these kids grow and mature. He’s a crazy talent as an athlete, but the best part about all this has been the way he’s lifted our team and given us a boost. Jordan was committed to trying to make the program better. He runs with power, more so than I’ve ever seen out of any quarterback. He is deceptively fast. He has an incredibly live arm. I think defensively, he can be an excellent strong safety/linebacker type. Jordan is physical. He’s tough. He is going to run hard, he’s going to play hard and hit hard. He’s a definite Division I talent.”

He’s not going to let anything bother him. Pain is not in his mindset. We’re going to miss not only his toughness and leadership, but what he brings to practice every day and the smile on his face.
